Choose the Topic of Sue Waters' Keynote

Sue Waters, @suewaters, often known as the Edublogger, has proposed an interesting idea! She wants you to help her choose her keynote topic!

Sue Waters will be our Day 1 Closing Keynote Speaker on Fri., July 30th; 9pm to 10pm PDT (LA); Sat., July 31st, 12am EDT (NYC); Sat., July 31st, 5am (London); and Sat., July 31st, 2PM (Sydney).

  1. Blogging for Teachers, hints, tips, best platforms, pros, cons,suggestions on how to keep blogging enthusiasm so as not to get writers block. Also how teacher leaders or teams might go about creating a “Blogging Alliance” at their school site. Getting support from your admin on this venture.

  2. I agree with Lisa’s comment above about doing something about Blogging for Teachers. I like the idea of exploring the creation of a “Blogging Alliance” at schools or even within school systems. When I encourage teachers to start bloggins, I get “What would I blog about” and “Who would be interested in what I have to say” as responses too many times.

  3. Is there a way to combine the blogging for teachers with Blogging with students into one mega-topic? Perhaps there is some crossover with these subjects as it is. I also agree with Lisa’s ideas on blogging… but am interested (as a newbie) with how to most effectively blog with students. Particularly high schoolers…is there a way to manage/host them all as individual blogs? Or is having a class blog better? Pros and cons of each? Best host sites to use for educators? I’m also interested in my students being able to connect with other students on a global level…can that be done with blogs? Lots of questions here, but I’m sure whatever topic you present will be informative and practical for use in the classroom.

    I’m terrible with titles…but maybe “Blogs as Reflective and Responsive Assessment”?

    Ideas: I would like to talk about QUICK and secure ways to create student logins and passwords- the part of any online/tech work that happens before the kids get involved. Any basic blogging protocol with rules and consequences.

  6. I think “blogging” is an interesting topic, blogging with students in particular. I’d like to know about how to motivate students to participate in classroom blogs, especially in the case of teenagers.

  14. I would like to learn more about Buddy Press. How-to’s, pros, cons, some possible suggestions about how to talk to network administrators about unblocking something such as Buddy Press when it will be flagged by the filter as social networking and then be blocked.

  15. Looks like it could be Blogging after reading through the comments above and if I was to be honest, I would like to learn about all of the topics listed. However, I would be very interested in hearing Sue’s views and ideas on PLN’s. I think that Blogging could be a useful element in a PLN and would love to hear more. In the last year I have been working on setting up my PLN and I have mainly used Twetdeck and Twitter for this, but I’m still at the consumer stage and need to move more into production mode.

  18. On the Edublogger site Sue has soooo many valuable tips about student and PLN Blogging that I don’t know how to vote. I think that the main focus should be on building a Personal Learning Network for teachers AND for students. I know that she has a limited amount of presentation time but I think that we would all benefit from tips on Blogging for teachers and Blogging with your students. I think that the award winning discussion would be a combination of blogging tips for teachers and students that to help build a PLN would be the best choice. Yes, I know that I have combined 3 choices. :-{

  19. “Tech for the 21st century teacher”
    I think there are so many new programs available which we can bring into the class, but it’s difficult to know where to start. I feel fairly confident with blogging, but I expect that many people out there feel unsure about where to start. Maybe this could be a “How to” workshop to encourage more people to bring their classroom into the 21st century – I know I always need more pointers 🙂

  26. What advice would you give to those who wish to create ‘domain’, ‘practice’ and ‘community’ for like minded practitioners in eportfolios in education? What process, what tools and what type of model for engagement? e.g. can you do it with a blog? could you do it with an email list? or would you advocate an online space that has other functions and tools. What would engage, what would sustain and what would promote an open sharing?

  28. Hello from Mexico, I a a rookie on emerging technologies. I would like to know about the best web2.0 tools (others than CAD ones), to use with Art and Architecture students, but any topic regarding to new technologies would be ok with me. Thank you for the opportunity to share experiences in the education field.

  30. Sue, anything you talk about will be interesting. And, it looks like a blogging angle is the way people are leaning. If blogging is the topic I’d like to see how best to set up a topics list or weekly agenda. My wife keeps 3 or 4 blogsites going but she has a schedule of what she writes each day so that she can keep them all currant and populated.

  31. PLN, initially i could not understand what it meant because people who talk about it just give short descriptions or just mention it.

    For me, this would be the most helpful. For someone new in technology integration, this would be a great way for us to learn from others.

    Teaching someone to create a PLN would not only help us learn but also open our doors to other views and what the world can offer.

  34. To me, making the connections with others is so important. You can have all of the knowledge and know how to put it into practice but if you have no one who is in it with you it will fizzle and die. PLN’s are so necessary today and learning how to begin, grow and maintain is important to all of us.

    Topic is similar to Marisa’s and Ashley’s, I suppose, but more subject/content specific (maybe 11+ age group):

    1. Setting up & using a class blog to discuss subject/project content
    2. Ways for teachers and students to work together to create a digital footprint of their studies for future students/teachers
    3. Connecting/sharing content with other schools/classes/countries

    Title idea comes from:
    beyond blogging = blogs as a (subject/expert) resource for the future
    blogging beyond = beyond the limits of the classroom and ‘normal’ blogs

    Whatever you choose, Sue, I’m sure it’ll be great, and I look forward to it 🙂

  39. Personal learning networks would be my 1st choice. Though I also would like to hear about your workflow as well.(mentioned above)
    I am a librarian in a small, private school with a 1:1 program where outside professional development is not required/ expected. I , however, am always trying to keep up/ get ahead of the changes in tech and educational approaches hoping to learn and share them with others. I use twitter and the ning as my major social network. Facebook is not working well for me-so I only infrequently use it. How are you effectively using a PLN and with whom? What suggestions do you have for others. Thanks.

  40. I would like to piggy back on Greg’s suggestion, “The Power of Reflective Thought” but with a different focus. I’d like to learn more about facilitating student reflection as a part of the learning process – learning about themselves as learners.

    I’m interested in project-based learning and I’d love to hear Sue’s ideas for using student blogs as an embedded part of the learning process to help students self-assess and to provide structured feedback and support to each other as they develop their projects.

  45. Multipurpose Blogging
    Teaching AND engaging parents at the same time!

    How could you use a class blog for your kids to learn (i.e. writing, editing, thoughtful feedback, etc…) and share some of what happens in the class to engage parents (who like to hear about their kids – what they’re doing)at the same time?

    It could be a win-win!
    1) When parents feel like they know what’s going on with their kids, they trust the teacher more, which often translates into parents supporting the teacher more and less friction/fear – so teachers can be more confident in their efforts towards change!
    2) Teachers don’t have to MORE work to try to build relationships with parents – it’s an outcome of the sharing (via blog)!

    But how to set up? Manage? Coordinate students? Could it be an end of day question to students, rotating through who writes each day? (i.e. What’s the favorite thing I learned today? Who did I help today? What am I grateful for today? What I look forward to is…)
